This exciting development will provide for the introduction of new services and the expansion of existing services at the Hospital. This development also signals 50 new jobs at Bon Secours Hospital Cork as well as construction jobs throughout the project.

This event marks another important milestone in the history of Bon Secours Hospital Cork, the largest private hospital in Ireland, which has been treating patients in the Munster region for over 100 years.  The extensive expansion costing some €77m is the largest ever investment undertaken by the Bon Secours Health System and is a key part of the €150m investment by the Health System as part of the recently launched  2020 Plan in its 5 acute hospitals in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Tralee and Dublin as well as its Care Village in Cork.

Minister of State at the Department of Health Jim Daly T.D. said: "The Bon Secours Health System has been part of life in Ireland for more than 100 years. The turning of the sod on this major development in Cork marks another significant development for the organisation and for the Bon Secours in Cork particularly, and I want to congratulate all involved on their achievement."

Bill Maher, Group CEO of the Bon Secours Health System said: “"I am delighted that Minister Daly marked the commencement of this key development and turned the sod on our major expansion of services in our flagship hospital in Cork. This is a proud day for the hospital, the Bon Secours Health System and all of our staff. This €77m development is another exciting project as part of our ambitious 2020 plan to deliver Advanced Medicine and Exceptional Care. The project significantly increases our facility and will provide a world class, modern environment in which to deliver healthcare. The expansion includes the development of Radiotherapy Services in a Joint Venture with UPMC which will be a welcome new service for cancer patients.”

Harry Canning Hospital Manager at Bon Secours Hospital Cork said: “We are delighted to be partnering with UPMC on the Radiotherapy Service. In addition, the expansion project will develop 81 private rooms, 4 additional operating theatres and expanded ICU facilities which will facilitate our service expansion plans over the coming years. Bon Secours Hospital Cork is currently one of the largest employers in the region employing over 1,100 staff and this exciting development will see a further 50 new jobs with opportunities for nursing staff, radiotherapists and clinicians as the hospital continues to expand its services over the next few years.”
