 The Inaugural Cardiology Nurses Conference

“Saturday the 27th of January" marked the Inaugural Cardiology Nurses Conference here at the Bon Secours Hospital Galway.  It proved to be a very successful event with over 80 nurses from around the country in attendance. Speakers included Consultant Cardiologists; Dr Darren Mylotte, Dr Briain MacNeill and Dr Yvonne Smyth who delivered presentations on topics relating to Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Device technology.  This was followed by presentations on Preventive Cardiology topics from Ms Nicola Fahy, Cardiology CNS at BSHG and Ms Denise Dunne Cardiovascular Specialist Co-Ordinator at Croi.  Ms Eleanor McIntyre, Chest Pain Clinical Nurse Manager at GUH, spoke about chest pain assessment with some case study presentations. The afternoon session was delivered by Mr Gerry Duffy, a Motivational Speaker who finished the conference with a practical informative session on healthy goals and habits for your own health. 

 

The conference provided a platform to show case the new state-of-the-art Cardiac Cath Lab which opened in June of 2017.  Since opening of the Cath Lab in excess of 500 procedures have been performed.  Ten Consultant Cardiologists availing of the facilities which currently operates Monday to Friday from 8am to 5.30pm.  Procedures available at the Cardiac Cath Lab include Coronary Angiography, Coronary Angioplasty + Stenting, Right Heart Catherisation, Trans Oesophageal Echo, Cardioversion, Permanent Pacemaker Insertion, Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator insertion, and Loop Recorder Implantation.  The Cardiac Cath Lab boasts the latest technology from Siemens, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, St Jude Medical and Health Care 21.
