Neurophysiology
Neurophysiology the study of how the body works with the brain and nervous system.
Neurophysiology is a branch of Neurology that specialises in recording and interpreting electrical signals from the nervous system (brain and nerves).
The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology offers a range of Neurophysiological investigations. Staff include a Neurophysiology and Neurology Consultant (Dr Peter Kinirons) and experienced Neurophysiologists (Claire, Claudia, Iris and Sorcha).
The department believes in a multidisciplinary model, working closely with specialist Neurology nurses, Consultant Neurologists, and the Paediatric team.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Indicated for:
- Epilepsy
- Brain Dysfunction (e.g. encephalopathy)
- Sleep Disorders
Nerve Conduction Studies
Indicated for:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow
- Generalised Peripheral Neuropathies
- Common Peroneal Palsy
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Electromyography (Needle EMG) and Advanced Nerve Conduction Studies
Patients should be referred for Neurological opinion prior to referral for Needle EMG to assess what muscles and nerves need to be examined so that we can allocate an adequate amount of time for the appointment.
Indicated for possible:
- Neuromuscular Disorders (such as Myopathies, Motor Neuron Disease and Myasthenia Gravis)
- Radiculopathies
- Plexopathies
Referrals
UPDATE - From the 1st of February we will stop accepting referrals in the post. GPs should refer through HealthLink and other Consultants should send the referral letter to neurophysiologyreferralcork@bonsecours.ie. Referral emails will only be accepted if they have patient’s name, date of birth, address, phone number and reason for test.
Referral letters must include the patients name, address, date of birth, test required, past medical history, reason for test and a contact telephone number for the patient.
