Breast Screening Galway
The Bon Secours Hospital provides a range of breast screening services in Galway including mammograms which are an X-Ray examination of the breast. Breast screening examinations usually comprise a minimum of 4 X-Ray's (2 of each breast) are normally performed.
These X-Rays are taken by a specialist radiographer in a dedicated mammography room. The images are read by a Consultant Breast Specialist Radiologist and the result is sent to the doctor who referred the patient.
Galway Breast Screening Sevices:
At the Bon Secours Hospital Galway we perform screening and symptomatic mammography. All symptomatic mammograms must be referred by a Breast Specialist Surgeon.
The Mammograms process at the Galway Bon Secours is as follows:
- The patient checks in at the main reception of the X-Ray services department.
- They will be given a questionnaire and if relevant insurance forms to complete.
- They will be invoiced and given a receipt.
- The patient then attends at the mammography area of the department.
- The radiographer will escort them into the room and may go through the questionnaire with them again.
- The patient will be asked to undress from the waist up and will be positioned by the radiographer.
- Each X-Ray requires the breast to be compressed for approx 10 seconds.
- When the images have been taken the patient will be asked to dress and will be told of when and to whom their results are sent.
Arranging Appointments:
A referral letter is required to be sent by phone or fax from your GP to the relevant consultants. Prior to making an appointment for a mammogram at Galway Bon Secours Hospital a referral letter signed by a doctor must have been received by the X-Ray department. Once this has been received the X-Ray department will contact the patient with the information and questions relevant to the appointment.
As a Mammogram involves the use of ionising radiation, patients may be asked the date of the first day of their most recent period, and whether there is any possibility they may be pregnant.
If the patient has previously had a mammogram in another centre they will be asked to bring these images with them (if they have them) or the Bon Secours X-Ray department will contact the other centre to get these images.
If the patient has any special requirement such as sight or hearing deficits, requires any assistance (eg must have a hoist to get out of a chair) or has any cognitive deficit please let us know when making the appointment.

The mammography room at the Bon Secours Private Hospital Galway is located in the X-Ray department and is open from 9am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

Costs:
A Mammogram costs €150 and may be partly covered by some insurers.
