Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons are trained in the surgical and medical treatment of conditions of otology (disease of the ear), rhinology (disease of the nose), laryngology (voice disorders), head and neck surgery, facial plastic surgery and paediatric otolaryngology (ENT disorders in children)
The range of activity available at the hospital includes the management and treatment of the following: The ears Hearing loss Ear infections Balance disorders Ear noise (tinnitus). The nose Injuries to the nose Deformities of the nose Adenoidectomy Sinus infections Seasonal allergies (hay fever) Tumours of the nose and sinuses.
The throat Inflammations of the throat (tonsillectomy) Laryngitis Snoring Voice and swallowing disorders Tumours of the throat and larynx.
Head and neck Swelling of the neck Cysts Thyroid disorders and tumours (cancerous and non-cancerous) of lymph and salivary glands.

Prof John Fenton, FRCSI (ORL-HNS), is an ENT/Head and Neck Surgery Consultant at the Mid Western Regional Hospital, Limerick and Barringtons Hospital.
He is also an adjunct Professor in the specialty at the Faculty of Science, University of Limerick.
He is a native of Dingle, Co. Kerry and a graduate of RCSI. He obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in anatomy during an 18 month period as a demonstrator at RSCI following an internship at Jervis Street Hospital.
He has taught ENT to students in all of the medical schools in this country and contributed to teaching at the University of New South Wales and Parisian schools whilst undertaking Fellowships in Australia and France respectively.
He was involved in the introduction of the new medical curriculum at the University of Liverpool during his tenure as Senior Lecturer there and has published extensively on the academic aspects of his specialty.
Educated to PhD level, Mr Ryan is a graduate of UCD medical school and completed his general ENT surgical training with the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He is also internationally fellowship trained in Head and Neck oncology from Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia which involved specialist training in the clinical and surgical management of complex Head and Neck cancer cases.

Mr Ryan maintains a strong interest in research, having published several first author papers in peer reviewed, high impact journals. His PhD has direct clinical relevance to otolaryngology involving investigations of the
cardiorespiratory reflex mechanisms maintaining upper airway patency in invivo animal models with particular clinical relevance to upper airway obstructive diseases. He has also worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical research, University College Dublin. Mr Ryan has received a number of distinctions and awards relating to his surgical training and research interests.
