Biography

Mr. D'Souza was born and brought up in India and joined the medical school in Mangalore, India in 1976. He commenced his Orthopaedic training in India in 1982 and then traveled to the UK in 1986 when he joined the Sheffield OrthopaedicRegistrarTraining programme for four years. This was followed by MCh in Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool. He was then appointed to the Senior Registrar training on the Irish training programme 1993. He did his forefoot training with Louis Baroukin Bordeaux followed by minimally invasive surgery with Niek van Dyke in Amsterdam. This was followed by a fellowship in spinal surgery in Ulm in Bavaria. Mr. D'Souza then returned to India as a Professor of OrthopaedicSurgery at the Fr. Muller's University teaching Hospital in Mangalore for four years. He joined UL Hospitals in Limerick, initially as a spinal and foot and ankle Surgeon in 2000. He is presently undertaking exclusive foot and ankle surgery for the past 10 years. Mr. D'Souza has over 70 publications in international journals along with several book chapters. He is the president elect of the Irish Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Biography

Mr Peter Dawson is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon. He has completed combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Fellowship training in this field as the UK National Spine Fellow at University of Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Mr Dawson is a Registered Specialist in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with the Medical Council, having completed Higher Surgical Training with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His specialist interest is in the management of degenerative disease and trauma affecting the entire spine as well as arthritis affecting the hip. He performs minimally invasive operations including decompression, fusion and discectomy surgeries of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, as well as total hip replacements. 

Mr Dawson is widely published in peer review journals and has presented at national and international conferences. He holds postgraduate qualifications in Patient Safety from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as well as a Masters Degree in Bio-Innovation from University College Cork. Mr Dawson maintains an ongoing involvement in patient safety and innovation projects. He is a Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and a member of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Biography

Mr Breandán Long is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and sports surgery specialist.

He graduated in medicine from University College Galway and did his orthopaedic training in Dublin and an arthroscopy fellowship in Birmingham, U.K. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Mr Breandán Long has considerable experience in treating all complex knee sport injuries. He has pioneered in Ireland the use of the larger 5 strand hamstring tendon graft for ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears. He also has considerable experience in redo ACL surgery using bone patellar bone graft and also the Quadriceps tendon graft. He has a particular interest in the rehab of ACL injuries and the use of isokinetic testing.

Repairs of osteochondral lesions using intra articular screws and suturing of meniscal tears can be accomplished arthroscopically.

Mr Long also performs patellar stabilisation surgery for dislocating and subluxating patellas.  Tibial tubercle transfers or medial patella femoral ligament reconstruction techniques are used.

Chondral lesions are treated using microfracture techniques followed by a specific rehab programme.

His other area of particular interest is shoulder surgery, where he has specialist expertise in treating rotator cuff tears, impingement syndrome, acromioclavicular joint degeneration and frozen shoulder.  These procedures are key hole and are performed using the arthroscope.

Shoulder dislocation, subluxation and labral tears can be treated arthroscopically using fixation devices and in cases that warrant it, the open Latarjet procedure is used.

Mr Long also treats all kinds of tendinopathies, such as tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, De Quervain’s synovitis in the wrist and Achilles tendonitis using a variety of treatments including platelet injections and surgery.

Hand problems like Dupuytren’s contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome and ganglion lesions can be successfully operated on.

Mr Long has a clinic in Bon Secours Hospital Barrington’s Limerick every Monday and is happy to accommodate any urgent case on the day.

Professor Eric Masterson

Biography

Professor Eric Masterson graduated with Honours from University College Dublin in 1984.  He served his Internship in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin.  He obtained a BSc in Anatomy in 1986 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1988.  Thereafter he commenced the Senior Registrar Training Programme in Orthopaedic Surgery. 

In 1994 Professor Masterson was awarded a Masters Degree in Surgery and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Orthopaedics and Traumatology).  He subsequently completed a one year Clinical Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction in Vancouver Canada and a six month Clinical Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology in Toronto, Canada.

Professor Masterson returned to Ireland in 1997 and commenced practice as Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in Croom Orthopaedic Hospital and University Hospital Limerick.  He was appointed as Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Science in the University of Limerick in 2002.

Professor Masterson is the author of several book chapters and over 60 publications in peer reviewed journals. He is the Irish Representative of the European Hip Society.  He has served on the Editorial Boards of national and international medical journals, been Chairman of numerous meetings and mentored Orthopaedic trainees on an ongoing basis over the last 20 years.

Professor Masterson joined Bon Secours Hospital Limerick at Barringtons as Head of the Department of Orthopaedics in January 2018.  He had enjoyed a long sojourn from the Bon Secours Group, having first worked for the Bon Secours Sisters in Glasnevin, Dublin in 1986 as a Medical Officer.

He brings with him a wealth of experience pertaining to all aspects of orthopaedic surgery.  His main area of clinical interest has been hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.  To date Professor Masterson has performed in the region of 10,000 joint replacements and receives referrals from throughout Ireland and abroad. He has developed a comprehensive team of support professionals to ensure a consistently high standard of care with excellent results.

Biography

Mr Joe Sparkes born in Belfast, moved with his family to Shannon where he was educated at the local St. Patricks Comprehensive School. He was highly involved in sports in the town including Wolfe Tones GAA, St. Senan’s RFC and Newtown FC. He then went on to attend Trinity College Dublin and following his graduation in medicine, he interned at the old Adelaide Meath Hospitals. He went on to train on the Dublin Region Surgical Scheme and subsequently the Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar Scheme.

Following his FRCS and fellowships Mr. Sparkes was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Tallaght Hospital, Dublin in October 2003.

Mr. Sparkes has completed a clinical fellowship in Adult Trauma and Lower Limb Reconstruction (Hip and Knee replacement) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre / University of Toronto and a fellowship in Adult Spine Surgery at Vancouver General hospital/ University of British Columbia and a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer /Weill Medical College/Cornell University New York. He also has an honours degree in Biochemistry from TCD and a diploma in medical management from the IPA/RCSI.

Mr. Sparkes has won several honours during his career including The Meath Hospital Junior and Senior Student Prizes, The Arthur Ball Prize in Surgery (TCD), The University Travelling Scholarship in Surgery (TCD) and he was the inaugural recipient of The Irish-American Breast Cancer Research Fellowship at MSKCC. He is a member of several orthopaedic groups including AAOS, AO Spine, IITOS , and has undergone further training in Medico-Legal Procedures and is a member of the Medicolegal Society of Ireland.

Mr. Sparkes clinical areas of interest include hip and knee arthroplasty, surgical and non-surgical management of neck and back pain including spinal injections and rhizotomy. Surgical treatment includes less invasive and minimally invasive surgery of the spine, joint replacement as well as a wide range of general orthopaedics including knee arthroscopy and soft tissue procedures such as carpal tunnel decompression .
