Work History

Sean returned to Ireland to assume a consultant post at The Galway Clinic and also at Bon Secours Hospital Limerick at Barringtons. He did so after holding a consultant NHS post at two University Hospitals in Liverpool, UK (St Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Alder Hey, Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital).

He is the author of numerous academic publications and maintains research links with The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute (San Francisco, USA), The University of Liverpool where he holds an Honorary Clinical Lectureship and, Alder Hey Hospital, (Liverpool, UK). His special surgical interests are oculoplastics (plastic surgery of the eye, eyelids), paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (eye-misalignment, squints, abnormal visual development).

Surgical Expertise As a Consultant Oculoplastic and Paediatric Ophthalmic surgeon in both adult and paediatric university hospitals of Liverpool, Sean amassed considerable experience in the treatment of routine (cataracts) as well as complex ophthalmic disorders, especially those related to plastic eye surgery and squints (misalignment of eyes).

Procedures

Some of the procedures he performs in adults and children:

  • Cataract Extraction and Intraocular Lens Implant (children and adults)
  • Blepharoplasty (surgery for excess eyelid skin and fat)
  • Ptosis correction (droopy lid correction for adults and children)
  • Haemangioma excision (vascular eyelid lumps presenting around birth)
  • Eyelid tumor excision and reconstruction (e.g. basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma)
  • Entropion surgery (in-turned lids and lashes)
  • Ectropion surgery (out-turned lids and lashes)
  • Correction of watery / sticky eyes (dacryocystorhinostomy and intubation in children and adults)
  • Botulinum Toxin for aesthetic (wrinkles) and clinical reasons (blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, aberrant regeneration post facial nerve palsy, crocodile tears)
  • Strabismus Surgery
  • Botox for horizontal, vertical or torsional squints (surgery and botulinum toxin is used commonly for the re-aligment of eyes squinting because of eye-nerve palsy, thyroid eye disease, trauma or when associated with ‘lazy eye’ in childhood)

Many of the more common eye disorders are also managed by Mr Chen such as Glaucoma, Diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). Juvederm, Restylane® and Laser / Light-based therapies (Lumenis) to face, neck and hands are also used for rejuvenation and facial contouring (cheek lift, chin ptosis etc) by Mr Chen as complementary to other plastic procedures.

Biography

Ms Jungkim achieved her medical degree at University College Cork in 1996.

 

She began her training in Ophthalmic Surgery in 1998 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2002. After completing the Higher Surgical Training Program in Ophthalmic Surgery in Ireland, she went on to do subspecialty training in London. She completed her Fellowship training in Glaucoma Surgery at the Western Eye Hospital London in 2010.

 

Since 2010, she has been working as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Bon Secours Hospital at Barringtons.

Biography

Ms Maeve O’Doherty is an Irish trained Ophthalmologist /Oculoplastic surgeon. She graduated from NUI Galway in 2000 and completed two years general medical training in internal medicine and became a member of the Irish College of Physicians (MRCPI). She continued her Ophthalmic training at The Eye and Ear Hospital and The Mater Hospital, Dublin and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland in 2010 (FRCSI).

Ms O’Doherty relocated to London where she underwent three Oculoplastic fellowships at Imperial College NHS Trust, Chelsea Westminster NHS Trust and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. She further complimented her general Ophthalmic training by completing a fellowship in cataract surgery. She has spent the last 10 years in private practice in the Cayman Islands working as a general Ophthalmologist and aesthetic eyelid surgeon.

Ms O’Doherty special area of interest is eyelid surgery, and she has a particular interest in cosmetic surgery around the eyelids.

She has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals

Biography

Mr O’ Reilly achieved his medical degree at University College Dublin in 1998. After his internship, he went on to complete an MSc in physiology.

 

He began his training in Ophthalmic Surgery in 2000 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2003. After completing the Higher Surgical Training Program in Ophthalmic Surgery, he did subspecialty training in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery in The Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead, a world renowned burns and plastic surgery hospital set up during World War 2.

 

In 2010 he was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in University Hospital Limerick and in 2017 he joined Bon Secours Hospital at Barringtons.

Biography

Pathma graduated with his medical degree in 2007 from University College Cork and received an award for being one of the top international entrants to study medicine. He completed his Higher Surgical Training in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital Dublin, Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Limerick and University Hospital Waterford. In 2015, Pathma received his Doctorate degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and won multiple national and international awards for his research into metastatic ocular melanoma. He completed his subspecialty training in medical and surgical retina in Bristol Eye Hospital and was a recipient of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists/Bayer Clinical Fellowship Award for undertaking this well-renowned fellowship.

Pathma is passionate about providing personalised, high-quality care. In the hospitals he worked in, he has initiated and implemented numerous changes that led to improvements in patient experience, pathways, safety and outcomes. During his fellowship, numerous donations were made to the Friends of Bristol Eye Hospital Foundation by his patients, for the sight-saving emergency surgery and aftercare he provided.

He has also worked as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital Dublin and in University Hospital Waterford. He is in the specialist division of the Irish Medical Council, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology. Pathma is also a member of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists, British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons, and the European Society of Retina Specialists.
