Dr. Miriam Delaney is a Specialist in Metabolic Bone Disease and is starting her practice as the Director of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program at the Bon Secours Hospital Galway.
After completing her undergraduate medical training in University College Dublin, and early post-graduate training in Ireland, she then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, USA. After residency in medicine at Boston Medical Centre, she completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Joslin Diabetes Centre, Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. This was followed by a Bone Fellowship studying Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases at Harvard’s Brigham and Womens Hospital. In 2000, she was appointed as a consultant and as Associate Director of the Skeletal Health and Osteoporosis Program, in the Endocrine, Hypertension Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2004, she moved to the Cleveland Clinic as the Associate Director of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program. She was also appointed to and worked closely with the Transplant Center and the Women’s Health Division. She worked closely with radiology, directing reporting of 16 DXA (bone density) machines at Cleveland Clinic. Most recently, she has worked in the School of Medicine, Galway, National University Ireland and Galway University Hospital.
Her research involved Osteoporosis in Men and Post-Menopausal Women, Transplant related bone disease and large database work with DXA. Also, calcium and vitamin D disorders, parathyroid related disorders and vitamin D therapy using UV light exposure. She has been chairperson of the ISCD Membership Committee and member of other committees. She has published in the field of Osteoporosis, DXA, Parathyroid Disease, and Vitamin D and published several chapters on Osteoporosis, and Bone Health. She is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine and also Journal of Clinical Densitometry and several other journals.
