Dr Maeve Skelly – MB BCh BAO (Hons), FRCPI, PhD
Dr Skelly graduated from University College Dublin with honours in 1989. She trained in Medicine and Gastroenterology in St Vincent’s Hospital and at the same time, completed a PhD in UCD.
Following completion of her training in Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, she was a lecturer in the University of Nottingham and subsequently worked as a Consultant in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
She was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician in the University Hospital Limerick in 2005.
Dr Skelly has a particular interest in all aspects of GI Endoscopy and has researched and published on this area. Her clinical interests include identification of patients at increased risk of GI cancer, advanced therapeutic Endoscopy, gut damage from anti-inflammatory medication, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and functional gut disorders e.g. IBS and identification and management of acute and chronic liver disease.
Dr Skelly is on the National Working Group for Quality Assurance in Endoscopy, as well as being a Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) recognised Trainer of Colonoscopy Trainers.
Dr Skelly is Clinical Lead in the Mid West for Bowel Screen, the National Bowel Cancer Screening programme.
Dr Skelly was Clinical Lead for GI Endoscopy in the UHL hospital groups for a number of years and a former Treasurer and current Board member of Irish Society of Gastroenterology.
Dr Skelly is the RCPI Mid West Programme Director for Basic Speciality Training and is also a Member of Council of RCPI.Back to top
