The Orthopaedic Surgery team at Bon Secours Hospital Dublin includes nine Consultants who provide assessment, intervention and treatment for numerous common and complex musculoskeletal conditions such as hip and knee pain management / replacement / revisions in addition to the treatment of foot and ankle conditions and shoulder and hand surgery.
The orthopaedic department is at the forefront of modern orthopaedic medicine. Continuous advancements in technology and continued education among the hospital's consultant and nursing teams, ensure that the department staff are leaders in their field.
Pre-operative screening clinics for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery occurs in a combined clinic with a consultant anaesthetist, joint replacement nurses and an orthopaedic surgeon. Pre-operative classes are held for patients due to undergo major joint replacement surgery. This gives patients an opportunity to understand their journey through the pre-operative stage, their admission to hospital and their post-operative care. Patients are exposed to the aids that would be used to mobilise them post surgery, in advance of attending the hospital for their surgery.
A dedicated orthopaedic ward cares for inpatients recovering from procedures and the surgical day ward cares for day patients.

The Orthopaedic team at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin includes 9 Orthopaedic Surgeons who specialise in the evaluation and treatment of disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. The team is further supported by a specialist nursing, physio and rehabilitation team, a state of the art Diagnostic Imaging department (MRI, CT, X-Ray etc.) and access to a team of experienced medical consultants as necessary.
Iin recent years, the dedicated Orthopaedic theatre was completely upgraded and it is now one of the most advanced in the country. The surgeons operate in laminar flow (‘clean air’) state of the art theatre with the technology needed to provide state-of-the-art surgery for our patients.

Mr Philip Brady is a graduate of University College Dublin (2000). He completed his training in orthopaedic surgery on the Higher Surgical Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, obtaining his degree FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 2012.
He completed two years of subspeciality fellowship training in Canada on the Toronto Arthroplasty & Lower Extremity Reconstruction Fellowship (Sunnybrook Hospital and Holland Orthopaedic Centre). His fellowship covered all aspects of knee and hip replacement surgery, revision knee replacement surgery, minimally invasive knee surgery and upper and lower extremity trauma. He returned to Ireland in 2014 to commence his practice and joined the Bon Secours Hospital Orthopaedic Team in June 2017.

Mr Neil Burke is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery. Neil specialises in computer navigated total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, total hip replacement and sports knee Injuries. He is also a Consultant at Beaumont Hospital and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Neil completed a highly regarded lower limb reconstruction fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his higher surgical training scheme in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2016, and is currently a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in Trauma and Orthopaedics and also in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Neil has over 30 research publications in peer-reviewed journals and is also the author of several book chapters. He has presented at numerous national and international scientific conferences. He was awarded the prestigious Lipman-Kessel prize for his research for his Masters of Surgery.
Mr James Cashman is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Mr Cashman graduated from University College Cork in 2001. He completed his postgraduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics under the auspices of the Irish National Orthopaedic training programme and went on to complete a hip and knee reconstructive fellowship at the Rothman Institute, Philadelphia, USA. He then completed a fellowship in the Young Adult Hip at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London.
He has published numerous peer reviewed articles in basic science and clinical orthopaedics, as well as texts on hip and knee arthroplasty.

Olivia graduated from the University of Dundee, Scotland in 2000 and completed her basic surgical training in Scotland before returning home to Ireland. After completing and being awarded a masters in surgery from Trinity College Dublin, she entered the Higher Specialist training programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics. She was awarded a FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery with RCSI in December 2011. Olivia then went on to complete 2 years of fellowship, one year in the Auckland Regional Hand Service and the second year in Wrightington Upper Limb in the UK. She passed the European Board of Hand Surgery Diploma examination in Paris in 2014.

Prof O Byrne is a medical graduate of UCD and went on to colmplete his Orthopaedic Speciality Training in Ireland and Fellowship Training in the USA.
Prof. O’Byrne was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to the National Spinal Injuries Unit, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and The National Orthopaedic Hospital in Cappagh in 1996. In 2005 he took up the post of Abraham Colles Professor in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and with an extended clinical practice at the National Orthopaedic Hospital.

James is a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2001). Following this, he completed his basic surgical training in Dublin and was awarded a Master of Surgery (MCh) degree from University College Dublin in 2008. He completed his training in orthopaedics and foot & ankle surgery on the Irish Higher Surgical Training programme in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, obtaining his degree FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 2011.
