Endocrinology

Endocrinology is the study of glands and the hormonal control of the body the regulation of which can be upset by particular conditions including diabetes and pituary malfunction.

The department includes a team of Endocrinologists, Diabetes Nurse Specialist and Dieticians with access to other specialties across the hospital including Ophthalmologists, Vascular Surgeons, General Surgeons and Cardiologist who collectively provide a comprehensive and team approach to the care of endocrine patients.

Patients with diabetes who require acute Medical Assessment may be referred by their GP to the Medical Assessment Unit at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.  

The endocrinology team at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin offer treatment for the following endocrine disorders in addition to the treatment of general endocrine disorders:

 

  • Diabetes mellitus incl. Non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
  • Diabetes and Vascular disease
  • Diabetes Insipidus / SIADH
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
  • Metabolic Bone Disease
  • Obesity
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Pituitary Disease following brain injury
  • Thyroid disease

 

Consultation Process

Arranging endocrine consults with one of our team of endocrinologists are organised by contacting their secretary directly. You will need to have a GP referral in order to make your appointment.

Educational consults with the Diabetes Nurse and /or Dietician can be arranged by contacting the Diabetes Care Centre Directly. Appointments and Ophthalmology reviews can also be arranged through the Diabetes Care Clinic. No referral is required for educational consults. To avoid any unnecessary duplication of tests, we would request that you bring a copy of your latest blood tests and chat to your GP before attending.

Biography

Margaret graduated from UCD Medical School in 1989 and completed her internship at St Vincent University Hospital. She received her MRCPI in 1991.

She spent three years as Medical Registrar and Trinity College Medical Lecturer in the Meath and Adelaide Hospitals during which she completed a clinical and laboratory research project, for which she received her MD from Trinity College. Margaret went on to spend two further years as Research Registrar in the Mater University Hospital and was involved in the provision and development of the maternity endocrinology services. Fellowships at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut followed – first with adult endocrine services with a focus on insulin resistance and then in paediatric endocrine services with a focus on insulin pump therapy in IDDM. She has numerous publications particularly in field of NIDDM, obesity and insulin resistance.

Margaret returned to Dublin in 2002 and has provides a comprehensive private endocrinology service since that time with special interests in hypothyroidism, NIDDM and PCOS.

Biography

Dr Zamuner completed her Specialist training in Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition and General Internal Medicine in Alicante’s University Hospital, Spain. She gained a Masters Degree in Clinical Research, in Spain 2011. She moved to Ireland in 2014 and she completed a research fellowship in Diabetes, specifically in Monogenic Forms of Diabetes in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

She joined the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin in the summer of 2017 and is also part of the consultant team in hospital's Medical Assessment Unit.

Areas of Interest

Diabetes Mellitus, Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY), Thyroid disease, Obesity, but is experienced in all aspects of General Endocrinology.

Biography

Prof Smith Graduated from UCD with an honours medical degree in 1994 and completed the Irish specialist registrar training programme in diabetes, endocrinology and general internal medicine in 2003. MD thesis in the field of hypoglycaemia in Kings College Hospital London. Appointed Lecturer in Endocrinology to St Vincents University Hospital in 2004 and then as a Consultant Endocrinologist to Beaumont Hospital in 2005. Since his appointment to Beaumont Hospital, Diarmuid has established an active research unit with a particular interest in diabetes and vascular disease, diabetes foot disease and hypoglycaemia. At a national level Prof Smith is the current secretary and Treasurer of the Irish Endocrine Society and was the HSE national clinical lead for diabetes between 2011 to 2013.
