Plastic and reconstructive surgery is concerned with the correction or restoration of form or function of the human body. It is a diverse surgical speciality looking after a wide variety of problems for patients. The plastic surgery department at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin recognises and caters to this diversity, dealing with primary and reconstructive surgery for cancer as well as performing hand surgery, and aesthetic and reconstructive facial and breast surgery.
As Plastic Surgery is so broad, the team of 6 Plastic and Reconstruction each bring their own set of skills, techniques and interest to ensure the completeness of the service provided to patients. All of our surgeons are on the Specialist Register of Plastic Surgeons of the Irish Medical Council and are members of the Irish & British Associations of Plastic Surgeons.
The team manages small day case local anaesthetic procedures in one of the three minor theatres in the hospital right through to patients who require major surgery in the main theatres within the hospital.
Services are provided with the support of the diagnostic imaging department, physio department, dietetics department to optomise the outcome for patients.

Mr. Safwat Ibrahim is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon at RCSI Hospitals Group and the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.
After graduating in 2002, Mr Ibrahim completed his specialist training in plastic surgery, and then went on to complete a Clinical Fellowship in Breast Reconstructive Microsurgery at the RCSI. He also obtained two international Masters Degrees in Breast Reconstructive Microsurgery, Aesthetic Breast Surgery, and Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema from The Universitat Autònoma, Barcelona.
Safwat was appointed as a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital in 2022 and has admitting privileges at Connolly Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Our lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.
He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a member of the Irish association of Plastic Surgeons and Irish Hand Surgery Society.
After graduating from University College Dublin in 2003, Fiachra completed his specialist training in plastic surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He has completed fellowships in skin oncology, head and neck surgery and microsurgery in Australia and worked as a Consultant in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Australia. Fiachra was appointed as a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Beaumont Hospital on his return to Ireland in 2018.

Jamie Martin-Smith is a consultant Plastic Surgeon with subspecialty interests in skin cancer, breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast & abdominal surgery.
Jamie graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2008 and completed the Irish plastic surgery specialty training in 2018. In 2015, he was awarded a Masters in Aesthetic Surgery by Queen Mary University London during which time he completed his research and dissertation on preventative strategies to reduce implant infection in breast augmentation.
Jamie took up his first consultant role in the world renowned cancer hospital, The Royal Marsden in Chelsea, London in 2018 following completion of a microvascular oncological reconstructive fellowship in the same unit. This consultant role involved reconstruction of major oncological defects including breast, limb, thoracic and perineal cases. His primary focus was microsurgical breast reconstruction. Jamie completed further aesthetic training with some of London's most well respected aesthetic and reconstructive surgeons operating out of The London Clinic, The Lister Clinic and 108 Harley Street.
Jamie returned to Ireland in June 2019 to take up a permanent HSE consultant position in Beaumont and Connolly hospitals. He runs both a general plastics clinic managing the full spectrum of plastic surgical cases and a dedicated reconstructive breast surgery clinic. He is involved in surgical training in The Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and holds a senior clinical lecturer role. His primary research interests are focused on autologous breast reconstruction, perforator flap surgery and early recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways following reconstructive surgery.

Barry O’Sullivan graduated from University College Dublin in 1998 and his first exposure to Plastic Surgery was in Beaumont Hospital in 2002, which decided his future direction of his training. His MCh from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in2007 studied the ‘Upregulation of Diabetic Wound Healing’. Upon completion of his Higher Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery in Ireland in 2001, Barry undertook fellowships in Trauma and Microsurgical Reconstruction in Perth Australia.
Barry worked as Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Perth Hospital before returning to Ireland in 2014 to take up a position in Beaumont and Connolly Hospitals. Barry has been an ATLS instructor for the pass 12 years and is a member of the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons and the Irish Hand Society.
His area of interest are head and neck cancer and breast cancer reconstruction along with skin cancer and upper limb / hand surgery.

Paul Sullivan graduated with honours in Medicine from UCD (2002) before completing the RCSI Basic Surgical Training Program from 2005-7. Paul spent the next two years undertaking a research MD from NUI, Galway whilst gaining experience in clinical plastic surgery. The next two years were as part of the RCSI plastic surgery residency leading to the RCSI Higher Surgical Specialist Training Program completed in 2014 with awarding of an FRCSI(Plast) and CCST (Certificate Completion of Specialist Training).
In 2014 Mr Sullivan began fellowship training in Hand Surgery in the world renowned St Andrews Centre, Chelmsford, UK for a year followed by a second year in Ortho-plastic Hand surgery in Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, NZ.
In 2016 he successfully completed the FEBHS (Fellow European Board of Hand Surgery) exam in Santander, Spain and joined the specialist register of the Irish medical Council. That summer Mr Sullivan returned to Ireland and was appointed as a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beaumont and Connolly hospitals with a specialist interest in hand and upper limb pathology and trauma as well as complex skin cancer and general reconstruction. Mr Sullivan is a member of the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons (IAPS), the Irish Hand Surgery Society (IHSS) and RCSI director of Core Training in Beaumont Hospital.
