Endocrinology is the study of glands and the hormonal control of the body the regulation of which can be upset by particular conditions including diabetes and pituary malfunction.
The department includes a team of Endocrinologists, Diabetic Nurse Specialist, Dieticians and Podiatrist with access to other specialties across the hospital including: - Ophthalmologists, Vascular Surgeons and Cardiologist who collectively provide a comprehensive and team approach to the care of diabetic patients.
Diabetic patients who require acute Medical Assessment may be referred by their GP to the Medical Assessment Unit at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.

Arranging Endocrine consults can be arranged directly with the Consultant by contacting their secretary directly. You will need to have a GP referral in order to make your appointment.
Educational consults with the Diabetes Nurse and /or Dietician can be arranged by contacting the Diabetes Care Centre Directly. Podiatry Appointments and Ophathalmology reviews can also be arranged through the Diabetes Care Clinic.
No referral is required for educational or podiatry consults. To avoid any unnecessary duplication of tests, we would request that you bring a copy of your latest blood tests and chat to your GP before attending.
Diabetes care is provided on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Diabetes related services are coordinated by our dedicated diabetes nurse who also provides education for inpatients who are existing or newly diagnosed diabetics and to outpatients.
The Diabetes Care Centre at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin is a specialist coordinated care and education service for recently diagnosed patients who are experiencing current and / or ongoing problems managing their diabetes.
The centre focuses on patient empowerment through educational programmes delivered by a dynamic multidisciplinary team including a diabetes clinical nurse specialist, dieticians, endocrinologists, psychologists and podiatrist backed up by ophthalmologists, vascular surgeons, cardiologists and renal physicians as required.
The management of patients with pituitary tumours is a particular focus and area of interest for the hospitals’ endocrine team. The hospital has a specialised ward geared towards the administration of pituitary function tests for patients with pituitary tumours.
Margaret graduated from UCD Medical School in 1989 and completed her internship at St Vincent University Hospital. She received her MRCPI in 1991.
She spent three years as Medical Registrar and Trinity College Medical Lecturer in the Meath and Adelaide Hospitals during which she completed a clinical and laboratory research project, for which she received her MD from Trinity College. Margaret went on to spend two further years as Research Registrar in the Mater University Hospital and was involved in the provision and development of the maternity endocrinology services. Fellowships at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut followed – first with adult endocrine services with a focus on insulin resistance and then in paediatric endocrine services with a focus on insulin pump therapy in IDDM. She has numerous publications particularly in field of NIDDM, obesity and insulin resistance.
Margaret returned to Dublin in 2002 and has provides a comprehensive private endocrinology service since that time with special interests in hypothyroidism, NIDDM and PCOS.

Dr Smith Graduated from UCD with an honours medical degree in 1994 and completed the Irish specialist registrar training programme in diabetes, endocrinology and general internal medicine in 2003. MD thesis in the field of hypoglycaemia in Kings College Hospital London. Appointed Lecturer in Endocrinology to St Vincents University Hospital in 2004 and then as a Consultant Endocrinologist to Beaumont Hospital in 2005. Since his appointment to Beaumont Hospital, Diarmuid has established an active research unit with a particular interest in diabetes and vascular disease, diabetes foot disease and hypoglycaemia. At a national level Dr Smith is the current secretary and Treasurer of the Irish Endocrine Society and was the HSE national clinical lead for diabetes between 2011 to 2013.

Professor Thompson qualified from Dundee University in 1981, and trained in Endocrinology in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he was awarded his MD thesis. He worked as Lecturer in Medicine in Edinburgh University, from where he was funded to work as Associate Professor in the Dept of Physiology, UCSF, San Francisco. He returned to Scotland as Consultant Endocrinologist in Glasgow before taking up post in Beaumont in 1997. He has served as Chairman of Diabetes Ireland and secretary of the Irish Endocrine Society. He is chairman of the European Hyponatraemia Network, and was the European delegate on the world consensus guidelines for management of hyponatraemia, published in 2013. He has served on the medical and scientific committee of the GAA and is doctor to the Dublin Hurling Team.
