DEXA Scan Galway
A DEXA scan is a type of x-ray test used to determine a patient’s bone density. The patient lies on their back on the DEXA bed and a scanner moves above them from mid thigh to mid chest. Two images are taken; one of the hip, and one of the lower back. From these images the Consultant Rheumatologist can give a result on the patients overall bone density. This result is sent to the doctor who referred the patient for the DEXA .

Consultation Process:
The DEXA scan process in Galway is simple and effective:
- The patient checks in at the main reception of the X-Ray services department.
- They will be given a questionnaire and if relevant insurance forms to complete.
- They will be invoiced and given a receipt.
- The patient then attends at the DEXA waiting area of the department.
- The radiographer will escort them into the room and may go through the questionnaire with them again.
- The patient will be asked to remove any metal objects from the area to be scanned and will be positioned on the bed by the radiographer.
- Two images are taken.
- The test normally takes 25 minutes to complete and is completely painless.
Arranging Appointments:
A referral letter is required to be sent by phone or fax from your GP to the relevant consultant. The X-Ray department at the Bon Secours Hospital Galway will contact the patient to make an appointment following receipt of a referral for DEXA signed by a doctor. As DEXA involves the use of a small amount of ionising radiation, female patients may be asked the date of the first day of their most recent period, and whether there is any possibility they may be pregnant.
If the patient has any special requirement such as sight or hearing deficits, requires any assistance (eg must have a hoist to get out of a chair) or has any cognitive deficit please let us know upon making an appointment.

Dexa is open between the hours of 9:30 and 4:30 Monday to Friday, as is its appointments office.

Costs
A DEXA scan costs €120 and may be partly covered by some insurers.
