Update on Patients Measures/Admissions - COVID-19
Welcome to the GP update 2021
We are conscious that this is a difficult time for you and your patients and wish to reassure you that Bon Secours Hospital Cork remains committed to maintaining our service to GPs and patients.
The primacy of patient safety is always a core principle of our work.
As the situation evolves, we will update this page.
MAU/PAU open (normal hours Monday to Friday - 8am-6pm)
The current clinical exclusion criteria are:
- Any severe respiratory illness
- Moderate/severe illness in any clinically high-risk patients
PLEASE NOTE - Known COVID positive patients can be accepted on a case-by-case basis

We will accept mild/moderate respiratory illness in previously well patients, and all cardiac illness as per historic practice.
No change to oncology admission criteria. The acute Surgical pathway continues as normal.
Paediatric Assessment Unit - PAU

PAU will accept respiratory and other febrile illness, including suspected COVID.
If a GP feels a clinical assessment and/or laboratory and radiology investigations are required in addition to a COVID test, then a PAU referral is ideal. In addition, through PAU we have access to a rapid-turnaround (under 2 hours) microbiological panel of 25 viruses/bacteria, including COVID (nasal/throat swab)
All charges (including the aforementioned panel) as incorporated in the PAU charge, capped at €350
Acute Admission/Out of Hours
To arrange an admission outside of MAU/PAU, please contact Bed Management/Bookings office - call first and once the admission has been confirmed, the GP referral letter can be sent to the Hospital.

Radiology Department Update: January 2021
We are pleased to be able to accept GP referrals for MRI scans again from the 1st March as we have secured a second MRI unit and experienced staff.
Ultrasounds are suspended until further notice. We will review in September. We will continue to accept GP ultrasound referrals for urgent Groin, DVT and Testes scans. We apologise for the inconvenience and please be assured we are doing all we can to expedite the continuation of our full service.

Radiotherapy Department
Please note that the Radiotherapy department at the Bon Secours Hospital which is a joint venture run in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre is running as normal during the Covid-19 emergency measures. New protocols and procedures are in place to maximise the safety of patients and staff. New patients continue to be seen using droplet isolation and social distancing precautions. All follow-up clinics are undertaken via telephone or virtual consultation. Brachytherapy is not proceeding at this time owing to the unavailability of seeds.
