The National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI) expects this number to double by 2040. Our team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists consults with experts in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, Pathology, Nutrition and Palliative Care at Bon Secours Cork Cancer Centre (BSCCC) to address all aspects of care for people with melanoma, from research and prevention to diagnosis, treatment and reconstruction.
Treatments for skin cancer include surgical excision and radiation. Topical therapies and cryotherapy are used to treat superficial skin cancers.
Mohs micrographic surgery
Mohs surgery is a treatment for high-risk skin cancers such as larger cancers, those on certain high-risk body sites, those with aggressive histologic subtypes, and cancers recurrent after previous treatment.
The first Mohs micrographic surgical department was established at BSCCC and it is currently the only private hospital Mohs surgical department in Ireland. Patients are referred by GPs and other consultants. Procedures are day case, performed with local anaesthesia.
Mohs micrographic surgery is particularly useful curing skin cancer when other methods have failed.
