This consists of the gullet (oesophagus), the stomach, the small intestine, the large intestine (colon), the rectum and anus (back passage), the liver, the gallbladder and the pancreas.
The endoscopy department at Bon Secours Cork Cancer Centre (BSCCC) provides a comprehensive range of services to diagnose conditions of the GI tract and liver, in conjunction with colleagues in GI surgery, radiology, pathology and dietetics. The department collaborates with the BSCCC oncology service in the diagnosis of GI and hepatobiliary cancers and the treatment of GI complications of cancers treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
The department provides a number of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures in a modern endoscopy unit for the diagnosis and treatment of GI cancers and benign conditions of the upper and lower GI tract. It provides a comprehensive range of services to diagnose oesophageal and colorectal cancer.

A direct access outpatient endoscopy service is provided for selected patients on receipt of a referral letter. The department is supported by two inflammatory bowel disease/GI nurse specialists who can be contacted directly by patients and GPs.
Consultant Laparoscopic General and Bariatric Surgeon
Mr. Colm O’Boyle was appointed to the Bon Secours Health System Cork as Consultant General Surgeon and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Surgery in January 2008. He is extensively experienced in laparoscopic surgery and trained in Dublin, Galway, Yorkshire and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia prior to becoming lead clinician for surgical services at Hull Royal Infirmary in 2002. He has a particular interest in laparoscopic bariatric surgery and has been performing procedures for morbid obesity since 1998. He is one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the UK and Ireland. He is currently the council member representing Ireland on the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He co-edited a book entitled Weightloss Surgery, A Comprehensive Medical Team Approach. He is a member of the International Federation for the Treatment of Surgical Obesity and British Obesity and Metabolic Surgical Society. His research interests include psychological aspects related to bariatric surgery, the affect of bariatric surgery on medical conditions, physiological consequences of anti-reflux surgery and evaluating new techniques in laparoscopic surgery. He has had a career interest in ongoing medical education and mentors final year medical students throughout the year. He is a member of faculty for the RCS Advanced Laparoscopic Training Course. He regularly performs most laparoscopic surgical interventions including Inguinal Hernia, Cholecystectomy, Incisional Hernia, Fundoplication, Splenectomy, Gastrectomy, Colectomy, Anterior Resection. He is expert at and routinely performs diagnostic and interventional colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
