Bon Secours Hospital Galway has an expert team in place to treat a wide range orthopaedic conditions.

Bon Secours Hospital Galway offers the widest range of Orthopaedic surgery services of any hospital in Galway and throughout Ireland. The service is provided by eight surgeons with various sub specialist interests who are regarded as experts in their respective fields.

Surgery is performed in two dedicated specialist operating theatres with Specialist Nurses supported by Post Op Recovery in a dedicated Orthopaedic Unit.

Surgery is carried out in two ultra clean air Operating Theatres and the post operative management of each patient is provided in a dedicated nursing unit with specialist orthopaedic nurses.  The service is supported by our comprehensive Radiology X-Ray services and Physiotherapy Departments.

Biography

Mr. Cullen has worked as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon after returning from a Senior Clinical Fellowship at St. Albans and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore in 2018. Mr. Cullen graduated from medical school in 2002 whilst on a rugby scholarship there. He went on to complete orthopaedic training through the Irish Healthcare System and RCSI in 2016/2017.

Mr. Cullen has published widely in the orthopaedic literature with extensive postgraduate research that includes a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from REMEDI/Galway University (osteoarthritis and stem cell research), honours by thesis in Healthcare Informatics (UCD), several book chapters, seminars and peer reviewed papers with presentations of his work at multiple national and international Conferences. He has won several awards for his orthopaedic research over the years, winning the Cappagh National Orthopaedic Prize, the Merlin Gold Medal at the Freyer meeting in Galway, the Best Basic Science Research Paper in Orthopaedics at the Atlantic meeting (Galway) and the Best Clinical Research Paper in Orthopaedics (Mayo). He continues to review for International Publications regularly, including the Journal of Arthroplasty.

Mr. Cullen is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a member of the Irish Orthopaedic Association, the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society, the European Orthopaedic Research Society, the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy and a member of the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction. His main specialist areas of interest are in primary and revision hip/knee joint replacement surgery.

Mr. David Dalton is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in spine surgery. He graduated with Honours from University of Galway in 2011.

Mr. Dalton completed higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery. He completed his Master of Surgery degree (MCh) in 2014 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2021 after success in the Intercollegiate FRCS examination in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. He holds a postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Economics and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Mr. Dalton completed 2 international spine surgery fellowships. He completed a fellowship with the Spine Surgery Unit in Oxford University Hospitals. He then travelled to New York to gain further experience in the Number 1 ranked orthopaedic hospital in the USA, Hospital for Special Surgery.

Mr. Dalton has a strong academic presence and has consistently published in high ranking orthopaedic and spine journals.

He currently holds the position of consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Galway University Hospital and Merlin Park University Hospital. He is now a performing surgery in the Bon Secours Health System in Galway.

Biography

Mr John Galbraith is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery. He was appointed to University Hospital Galway in 2020 and offers a tertiary referral service for complex shoulder, elbow and hand conditions for the region. He commenced at the Bon Secours Hospital Galway in 2020.

John graduated with honours from University College Cork in 2007. After completing higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery in Ireland, he then completed a one year shoulder and elbow fellowship in Christchurch, New Zealand. Following that, he completed the internationally renowned Dandenong Hand Fellowship for one year in Melbourne, Australia. He also completed a visiting fellowship for 2 months focusing on elbow reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He successfully completed the European Board of Hand Surgery Diploma examination in 2019.

John is involved in research and has over 40 publications in peer reviewed journals. He completed his Doctor of Medicine thesis for his biomechanical research in University College Cork and carried out further biomechanical research while in Melbourne and New York. He has won prizes both nationally and internationally for his research work.

Biography

Mr Kearns graduated with honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. Having completed higher surgical training in Orthopaedics & Trauma in Ireland, Mr Kearns completed fellowships in Adult Reconstructive Surgery in London Ontario and Foot & Ankle Surgery in Birmingham UK. Research has always been a key area of interest and he has won a number of National and International prizes. No fewer than 55 of his research papers have been published in peer review journals , cited over 700 times. He has made over 200 presentations at National, European and International Meetings. His current interest is on the clinical application of basic science research in the areas of cartilage injury and adult reconstructive surgery.

He currently holds the position of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Galway University Hospital and is an Honorary Lecturer at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He has also worked in the private sector for the past ten years and has established himself as one of the country’s top Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  He is heavily involved with the advancement of Foot and Ankle surgery in this country and is using and researching innovative products and techniques.

He has a special interest in osteochondral lesions of the ankle and their treatment. Other areas of expertise include lower limb joint replacement, tendon transplant and reconstructive surgery.

Clinical Practice:
Having commenced practice in Galway in 1996, Professor Mc Cabe is the longest serving Spine Surgeon in the Irish Public System. His expertise covers the full spectrum of traumatic, degenerative and tumour spine conditions as well as deformity surgery. He has pioneered technologies in this area including anterior and posterior cervical fixation and percutaneous spinal surgery. He has particular expertise in the management of complex spinal conditions in the presence of prior surgery.
Professor Mc Cabe also has an extensive practice in hip and knee surgery given his unique dual fellowship training in the world renowned Hospital For Special Surgery, New York .This experience has ensured that he is skilled and has a wealth of knowledge in dealing with all aspects of musculoskeletal conditions pertaining to the spine and hip/knee area, conditions which often times can be difficult to diagnose and treat.


Research and Publications:
Professor Mc Cabe is very involved in ongoing research and teaching particularly in the area of spinal surgery. He has over 80 publications in peer reviewed journals as well as a number of co-authored book chapters in both spinal surgery and arthroplasty. He presents regularly at national and international meetings.

Biography

Mr Murphy is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon practicing at Galway University Hospital and Merlin Park Hospital, Galway since 2015. He completed a hip and knee reconstructive fellowship in Lyon, France at the Centre Orthopédique Santy, and completed further fellowship training at Addenbrooke’s Cambridge University Hospital, UK, specialising in Trauma. Mr Murphy is departmental lead for the Irish National Orthopaedic Register and the Irish Hip Fracture Database, and is extensively published with ongoing research interests in hip pathology. He acts on international faculty for hip arthroplasty, trauma and anatomical approach educational meetings, and is actively involved in higher surgical education in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in Ireland.

Mr. Gerard A. Sheridan is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee reconstruction surgery. He graduated with Honours as a Scholar from Trinity College Dublin in 2012. He was ranked number 1 in the country for the higher surgical training scheme in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

 

After completion of 2 years core surgical training, Mr. Sheridan then completed 6 years of higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery. He completed his Master of Surgery degree (MCh) in 2016 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2019 after success in the Intercollegiate FRCS examination in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. He holds postgraduate qualifications in Healthcare Management and Clinical Education and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education.

 

Mr. Sheridan then completed 3 subspecialty fellowships. He completed a fellowship in Musgrave Park Hospital Belfast specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery. In 2021, he completed a 1 year fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada where he gained experience in the full spectrum of hip and knee reconstructive surgery. He won the ‘resident’s prize’ for ‘fellow of the year’ in Vancouver. In 2022, he completed a fellowship in deformity correction and complex limb reconstruction in the premier Orthopaedic hospital in the USA, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. He was awarded the ‘Gavriil Award’ for ‘Excellence in Complex Limb Reconstruction Surgery’ while in HSS.

 

Mr. Sheridan has a strong academic presence and has published widely in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty and complex limb reconstruction. To date he is the author of 74 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters. He has received 12 research awards in the field of Orthopaedics and 10 academic awards throughout his career to date. He is a regular academic reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty.

 

He currently holds the position of consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Galway University Hospital and Merlin Park University Hospital. He is now a performing surgery in the Bon Secours Health System in Galway.
