Fluoroscopy, Bon Secours Hospital Galway

Fluoroscopy involves the real time imaging of structures within the body using x-rays and contrast agents. Fluorosopy can be used to investigate many areas of and processes within the body. For example a Barium Swallow is a fluoroscopy test which shows the structures and mechanics involved in swallowing.

As fluoroscopy involves a radiation dose to the patient, female patient will be asked when the first day of their most recent period was. Depending on the type of test it may be necessary to have the test at a certain time within the patients menstrual cycle, or when they are sure there is no possibility of pregnancy.

Services Offered:

There are many different Fluoroscopy exams performed in the x ray services department at Bons Secours Hospital Galway including:

  • Barium Meal
  • Barium Swallow
  • Hysterosalpingography
  • Joint Injections

Consultation Process:

The X-ray process at the Bon Secours Private Hospital Galway is simple and effective:

  • The patient checks in at the main reception of the X-Ray department.
  • They will be invoiced and given a receipt.
  • The patient then moves to the X-Ray waiting area of the department.
  • The patient may be asked to get changed in one of the changing rooms and then will be brought into the fluoroscopy room.
  • The radiographer will then check the patients details and pregnancy status.
  • All fluoroscopy examinations are performed by a consultant radiologist and a radiographer.
  • The length of time taken to perform the test varies greatly but is rarely longer than 30 minutes.
  • After this the patient may get dressed and leave the department.
  • The images are read by the Consultant Radiologist who performed the test and the result is sent to the doctor who referred the patient.

Arranging Appointments:

A referral letter is required to be sent by phone or fax from your GP to the relevant consultant. The Bon Secours Galway X-Ray department appointment secretary will contact the patient to make an appointment following receipt of a referral for fluoroscopy signed by a doctor.

As fluoroscopy involves the use of a small amount of ionising radiation, female patients will be asked the date of the first day of their most recent period, and whether there is any possibility they may be pregnant. If they are unsure of their pregnancy status the appointment will be deferred until the patient is definitely not pregnant.

If the patient has any special requirement such as sight or hearing deficits, requires any assistance (eg must have a hoist to get out of a chair) or has any cognitive deficit please let us know when making the appointment.
