This non-invasive, non-ionising radiation modality is extensively used in investigation of a wide variety of conditions including disease of the thyroid, kidneys, liver, pancreas, gall bladder and pelvis (ovaries, uterus and prostate). Biopsy under ultrasound control is also performed regularly and includes assessment of lesions of the kidney and prostate. Doppler facility enables investigations of vascular abnormalities such as occlusive carotid artery disease and varicose veins.

What is an Ultrasound scan?

An Ultrasound is a painless scan that uses sound waves to create images of the tissues and organ within your body.

Who will I see?

Throughout your Ultrasound examination you will be cared for by a highly skilled Consultant Radiologist and Ultrasound Care Assistant.

Is it Safe?

There are no known risks associated with Ultrasound scanning.

Medical Imaging can bring very real benefits to patients. The results of your Ultrasound Scan can help your doctor make the right diagnosis to any health issues you have been experiencing.

Before your Ultrasound scan

Not all Ultrasound scans require preparation however when we book your appointment we will give you full instructions to follow prior to your scan. Please continue to take any medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor or the X-Ray department.

The day of your Ultrasound scan

Please check-in with our administrative staff at X-Ray reception and you will be shown were to wait for your scan. Depending on the type of Ultrasound you will be having you may be asked to undress into a hospital gown in a cubicle adjacent to the Ultrasound room

What happens during your Ultrasound scan?

Once in the Ultrasound room you will be asked to lie on the couch. The lights will be dimmed so the Consultant Radiologist can see the images clearly on the screen. The Consultant Radiologist will place some clear jelly/gel on your body part being scanned and move a hand held probe over the body part to obtain many different views. The Ultrasound scan usually takes 15-45 minutes to complete depending on the body part being examined.

Do I need an X-Ray dye Injection?

An injection of X-Ray dye is not necessary for this test.

After your Ultrasound

After your Ultrasound scan you will feel no ill effects and you may continue with your normal daily activities.

When will I get results?

The acquired Ultrasound images will be read by a Consultant Radiologist after your visit. A report will be sent to your referring doctor.
