Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine that deals with the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

We assess and treat the full range of conditions including

  • Acute inflammatory disease.
  • Gout (inflammatory arthritis).
  • Osteoporosis – bones that are brittle and fragile.
  • Osteoarthritis – joint disease affecting cartilage in a joint.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis – arthritis  of:

    ☛ neck,

    ☛ lower back, and

    ☛ buttocks

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica – condition that causes pain, stiffness and inflammation.
  • Giant cell arteritis – inflammation of lining of arteries.
  • Lupus and other connective tissue disease. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs.

Biography

A graduate of medicine from UCC in 2010 Dr Cronin returned to Cork following 5 years at the Rheumatic Diseases Unit, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh where he completed specialist training and held post as acting Consultant Rheumatologist.  Dr Cronin also held the position as Clinical Tutor Associate and Honorary Clinic Research Fellow at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. 

In 2013, Dr Cronin completed a Master's degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine at UCC before undertaking full time clinical research at APC Microbiome Ireland and the Department of Medicine.  Dr Cronin was awarded a PhD in 2018 for his thesis entitled "Physical Activity for Health:  The Impact of exercise on the human gut microbiota and pro-flammatory cytokines".  He has published widely in the areas of the gut microbiome, bone health and exercise medicine.  He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine and an invited member of the Royal Osteoporosis Soceity's Bone Research Academy.  In 2019 Owen was awarded a Research and Education Young Investigator award for his work from the Americal Society of Bone and Mineral Research.  He currently sits on the editorial board of the journal Rheumatology Advances and Practice. 

Dr Cronin is proficient in all areas of general adult Rheumatology including the use of ultrasound for the assessment of temporal arteritis.  He has achieved certification from Glasgow Caledonian University in the use of Ultrasound for synovitis assessment.

Biography

Dr Catherine Molloy,

Qualifications: MD MSc (Clin Rheum) FRCP CCD

Dr. Catherine Molloy was appointed in 2014 as Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork.

A graduate of UCC, she completed her general professional training in Cork. She completed her MD thesis in the Molecular Genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis in UCC.
Speciality training in Manchester and completion of an MSc in Clinical Rheumatology was followed by a Clinical Fellowship in Toronto, Canada. She worked as Consultant Rheumatologist and Acute Physician (Medical Assessment Unit) in Plymouth NHS Trust, UK and then Cork University Hospital.

Her main interests are in Early Inflammatory Arthritis, the Spondyloarthropathies (e.g. Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic arthritis) and Metabolic Bone disease, particularly Osteoporosis. In addition, she has expertise in the connective tissue diseases (SLE, Scleroderma, Inflammatory Myositis), Osteoarthritis and general rheumatology, and a developing interest in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
