We retain and extend our scope of accredited tests annually to ensure clinical and technical excellence in all of our laboratories. Our experienced team of Pathology Consultants and scientific staff regularly submit work to internationally recognised external quality assurance schemes. In addition, Consultants participate in Multidisciplinary Team Meetings. Patients can be confident that the right result is provided on the right specimen at the right time and interpreted according to the right reference data. We perform over 500,000 tests per year using the most up to date clinically approved methods. We are committed to constantly improving on our turnaround times while maintaining our quality systems.
For Histology outpatient specimens collected outside of the confines of the Bon Secours Health System Cork, a signed Service Level Agreement must be in place between the Pathology Department and the referring Doctor/Dentist/Service.

The Hospital Blood Bank provides routine and emergency blood group and compatibility testing for both surgical and medical patients. The Blood Bank also stocks “Blood Derived Products”, such as PCC for the rapid reversal of Warfarin, Solvent Detergent Plasma and Fibrinogen for the management of a bleed. The Blood Bank liaises with the Haemovigilance team and the Hospital Transfusion Committee and is compliant with EU legislation on Quality and Safety of Blood and Blood and Blood Components (EU Directive 2002/98/EC). The Blood Bank has 24/7 clinical and Laboratory support to manage patients in a timely manner.

The automated chemistry section provides analysis for renal, liver, cardiac, lipid, iron studies and specific protein assays. In addition electrophoresis, allergy and associated assays are performed and the immunoassay section performs endocrine, tumour marker, troponin, BNP and therapeutic drug monitoring assays.

The Histopathology department processes a wide variety of tissues from small biopsies to large resections. Tissue is analysed microscopically and a large repertoire of immunocytochemistry stains are utilised to aid diagnosis, prognosis and determine response to therapies. Non-Gynaecological Cytology is preformed on a variety of fluids.

The department provides a clinical service which ensures that patients are treated in a timely and effective manner. The department works closely with the Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Department. A comprehensive Serology service including immunity status testing is also provided.

The Phlebotomy Department operates 8.00am - 4.15pm Monday to Thursday & 8.00am - 2.00pm Friday for out-patients and GP referrals. An appointment is necessary - present your referral letter or request form at reception desk and you will have your bloods taken as soon as possible. Please call 021 4801720 to make your appointment. Dr. Aoife McCarthy has recently been appointed to Bon Secours Health System Cork as a Consultant Histopathologist, following post-graduate specialty training in Histopathology in Ireland and North America.
Dr. McCarthy graduated from the School of Medicine in University College Cork, and then completed Basic Specialty Training and Higher Specialty Training in Histopathology in Munster and South Dublin, under the auspices of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. This included a visiting Research Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Washington.
Dr. McCarthy then undertook a 2-year Clinical and Molecular Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Pathology at University Health Network and University of Toronto, in Canada, which additionally encompassed Gynaecological, Genitourinary and Breast Pathology.
Dr. McCarthy is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom, and a member of United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Canadian Association of Pathologists, The Pathological Society of Great Britain & Ireland and British Division of the International Academy of Pathology.
Graduated from University College Cork in 1993. Completed Specialist Haematology and Oncology Training in the United States at Duke University Medical Centre. She obtained American Boards of Internal Medicine and American Boards of Haematology as well as a Masters Degree in Clinical research from Duke University. She was a member of Faculty at Duke University medical Centre and was awarded an American Society of Haematology Clinical Scholar Award in 2002.
Following return to Ireland she was Director of the Comprehensive Coagulation Service in Cork University Hospital since 2008. She has a developed a strong expertise and Thrombosis, particularly Thrombosis Prevention and Anticoagulant Management.
On a National level she has been a member of the National haemophilia Council , National Product Selection Committee and National Specialty Director for Haematology Training. She is a founder member and Chair of Venous Thrombosis Ireland.

Dr. Pinto has recently been appointed to Bon Secours Health System Cork as a Consultant Histopathologist, following post-graduate specialty training in Histopathology in Spain.
Dr. Pinto graduated from the School of Medicine in Alfonso X "El Sabio" in Madrid, and then completed Basic Specialty Training and Higher Specialty Training in Histopathology in Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, Oviedo, Spain, under the auspices of the Spanish Society of Anatomical Pathology and the Universidad de Oviedo. This included a visiting Fellowship on Hematopathology at the Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Madrid and Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, Barcelona.
Dr. Pinto is a member of the Spanish Society of Anatomical Pathology, Spanish Division of the International Academy of Pathology, and a member of European Society of Pathology.
