Meet the Multidisciplinary Team:


Dr. Will Fennell works at Cork University Hospital and the Bon Secours Hospital. During a distinguished career he has been President of the Irish Cardiac Society, Chairman of the Irish Board for Training in Cardiovascular Medicine and President of the Irish Heart Foundation. He is currently director of Training in Cardiology for the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training. Dr Fennell has considerable experience in the assessment for cardiovascular fitness of patients undergoing bariatric surgery.


Dr Liam Doherty was appointed as Consultant Physician and Honorary Lecturer at North Tyneside District General Hospital in 2003. He was appointed as Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork in September 2006. He is a member of the Irish Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic Society, Irish Sleep Society, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.


Dr. Gillian Moore-Groarke is a registered health psychologist and has worked in the area of eating disorders for the past 20 years. She is the author of several books and journal articles in the area of anorexia, bulimia and overeating.


Catriona has been working as PA to Mr. O'Boyle for the past three years. She has extensive experience in dealing with patients with weight problems. She forms an important link between the patients and the Multidisciplinary Team. She is instrumental in co-ordinating the support group meetings.


Diarmuid Duggan, Senior Dietician

BSc Sport & Exercise Science, PgDip in Nutritional Science, PgDip in Dietetics. Diarmuid is a senior dietitian with extensive experience in advising patients contemplating obesity surgery. He is a member of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Association (INDI), associate member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the ADA's weight management interest group, and the ADA's bariatric surgery interest group. Some of the world's top bariatric dietitians are involved with these groups and this allows Diarmuid to keep up to date with the latest issues and guidelines relating to bariatric surgery. Prior to qualifying as a dietitian Diarmuid worked in the exercise industry. He sees diet, exercise, and behavioural changes as the essential pieces of the overall weight management puzzle.

Billy Murphy, Dietitian

BSc Sport & Exercise Science, MSc in Human Nutrition, PgDip in Dietetics
Billy is a member of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Association (INDI) and has been working as a dietitian in the Bon Secours Hospital for the past 3 years. He has a special interest in diabetes, weight management and bariatric surgery. Prior to qualifying as a dietitian Billy worked in the exercise industry. The skills he acquired during this time in addition to his interest in behavioral change and comprehensive dietetic knowledge gives his clients the best possible opportunity to achieve their personal goals and targets.

Karen Macken, Dietitian Manager
BSc Dietetics, HDip Management

Karen has over 15 years experience in clinical dietetics and weight management. She has extensive experience advising patients contemplating bariatric surgery. She is an active member of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Association and the British Dietetic Association, and is involved in a number their interest groups. Karen facilitates the 12 week weight management and healthy lifestyle programme in the Bon Secours hospital. She is actively involved in the support of bariatric patients before and after their procedure. She is especially interested in the psychology of lifestyle behaviour.

Geraldine Cagney, Nurse Specialist

Geraldine is a registered Nurse and Midwife. She also holds a BA Hons. in Counselling and Psychotherapy, with a special interest in eating disorders. As a member of the multidisciplinary bariatric team she sees patients for counselling before and after surgery.


Dr. Eoin O’Sullivan was appointed as Consultant Endocrinologist at the Bon Secours Hospital Cork in 2011.  A UCC graduate, his initial training was in Cork, followed by time in Dublin, Galway and Scotland.  His main interest lies in diabetes and having worked in bariatric units here in Ireland and the UK, he oversees the management of patients with diabetes before, during and after bariatric surgery. He has produced 30+ peer-reviewed publications and 50+ abstracts from presentations at national and international meetings.
