Bon Secours launches new Breastcare.ie Website

Everyday hundreds of women in the Ireland face the fear of a diagnosis of breast cancer. A new website, www.breastcare.ie aims to provide important information for these women and their families, including resources and support for both benign breast conditions and breast cancer. The website was launched by the Specialist Breast Care Centre at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork and offers both men and women specific detailed information on breast conditions, including the process of triple assessment and breast awareness. The website also has the ability to accept online electronic referrals to the centre from GP's. The centre was opened in 2009, and provides all aspects of triple assessment and routine mammograms in a purpose-built dedicated unit. Ms. Donna Roche, Clinical Services Manager is very excited at this opportunity to enhance information and communication with both the patients and the health care professionals.
The launch coincided with the presentation of a cheque of €10,000 to the Irish Cancer Society. The money was raised by the hospital staff holding events to mark the 25th anniversary of Daffodil Day. The events included a musical recital in the hospital chapel, a coffee morning and cake sale in the hospital restaurant with all products baked in-house and interdepartmental competitions. The highlight of the week for the staff and patients was a visit by Mr. Eoin Cadogan to the patients in the cancer treatment wards.
In 2011, the hospital strengthened its links with the Irish Cancer Society with the opening of a new Daffodil Cancer Information Centre. The Centre provides a wide range of information, advice, help and support locally to the patient, relatives, healthcare professionals and the general public. The Centre is staffed by an experienced cancer nurse who is supported by trained volunteers.The Daffodil Cancer Information Centre is a free service, with no appointment necessary and is located just off the main hospital foyer.
