Provision of quality respiratory and sleep diagnostic tests for inpatients and outpatients
The Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Department at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin provides a comprehensive service diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients with a wide range of respiratory and sleep disorders. Our 5 Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Consultants are supported by specialist nurses and respiratory physiologists and work closely with colleagues across the hospital including Diagnostic Imaging / X-ray, Physiotherapy and Endoscopy to provide a swift and complete service for all patients.
The Rapid Assessment Respiratory Clinic operates within the department providing an innovative streamlined service for patients requiring timely expert respiratory opinion and investigations including post covid patients experiencing ongoing respiratory issues. Investigations are in most cases completed and evaluated in the same visit and an individualised action / care plan devised for patients.
In 2022, the department opened a new state of the art Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) facility including 4 PFT suites and offering a range of routine and specialised diagnostic tests.
The Department provides standard and specialised diagnostic services for indications including:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome and other sleep related conditions.
- Quantification of the severity of known lung disease.
- Assessment of the potential effects or responses to environmental or occupational exposure

The department has 3 dedicated sleep study beds providing high quality overnight diagnostic testing to over 700 patients each year. All studies are conducted within the hospital on an inpatient basis and are non-invasive.
For patients with a chronic cough, uncontrolled or decreased control of asthma or COPD, new diagnosis of COPD / Pulmonary fibrosis or those with decreased exercise tolerance, patients can be referred to our new Rapid Assessment Respiratory Clinic.
This innovative streamlined service for patients requiring expert respiratory opinion and investigations ensures that patients are seen quickly by a specialist consultant and respiratory team, investigations are completed and evaluated in the same visit and an individualised action / care plan devised for patients.
The service is delivered by Dr Emmet O Brien and Prof Ross Morgan . This clinic is supported by a team of Respiratory Physiologists who provide diagnostic testing for this service.

Conor was educated in Blackrock College and graduated from UCD. After completing a three year Fellowship in Stanford University in California, he returned to Ireland as Consultant Respiratory Physician in Connolly Hospital and Mater Hospital and Professor of Medicine in UCD. In addition, he currently serves as Clinical Director. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians in Ireland and Fellow of the College of Physicians in London and Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians (U.S.).
His post-doctoral thesis was awarded for his work in lung transplantation.
He has served on various government committees; for three terms on the Health Research Board and for three terms on the Council of the College of Physicians.
Conor has delivered over two hundred invited papers to international medical and scientific societies and published over one hundred papers in the peer reviewed international literature.

Ross Morgan graduated from UCD in 1996 and undertook specialist registrar
training in Respiratory Medicine in Ireland followed by a 3 year fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Boston University. He has been a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Beaumont Hospital since 2007 and is a Fellow of the RCPI and of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a council member of the Irish Thoracic Society and Chair of the Lung cancer group at the NCCP. He is also chairman of ASH Ireland.
His clinical and research interests are in lung cancer, pleural disease, airway inflammation and bronchoscopy.

Prof Emmet O Brien graduated from University College Cork in 2006, and completed Higher Specialist Training in Respiratory Medicine in 2016. He was awarded a PhD from RCSI for his work in translational respiratory medicine and has authored several publications and book chapters. Prof O Brien completed his fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in 2018 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre in Pittsburgh, USA, and was a practicing faculty member there before returning to Ireland in 2019.
In addition to working as part of our respiratory team at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin, Prof O’Brien works as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Beaumont Hospital and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at the RCSI, where he is active in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Prof O Brien is clinically experienced in all areas of general respiratory and sleep medicine, with sub-specialist interests that include lung cancer, pulmonary nodules, COPD, sleep medicine, and advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy including EBUS.

Sleep Studies are covered by the majority of health insurance plans though depending upon the policy there may be a small excess to be paid.
