Tralee Community Initiatives

As a follow on from National Arthritis Week (October 10th/16th) The Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland with the financial Support from both Kerry County Council Community Support Fund and The Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Community Initiatives Programme are giving everyone with arthritis including family and friends the opportunity to become a ‘’TRI-ATHLETE’’ and take part in some gentle exercise as a means of controlling their arthritis, raise funds locally, raise awareness and have fun.

This is a fun event, not a race or competition and is open to everyone.  Anyone can be a triathlete!   Unfortunately for those of us who live with arthritis on a daily basis there is no known cure, but with the right information and guidance it is possible to manage the condition, leading to a reasonable quality of life. Little things can make a big difference to a person with arthritis. Difficulty with the little things like making a  cup of tea, getting dressed or opening the front door can all add up to have a big impact on a person’s quality of life.

Arthritis Ireland understands this. A cornerstone philosophy at Arthritis Ireland is “Moving is the Best Medicine” to controlling a persons arthritis.  With this in mind, they have launched a unique initiative to engage the Irish public to get out and get active. The Micro-triathlon is the first of its kind in Ireland.  It is open to everyone, of all ages and all fitness levels.

Micro Tri involving 30 min of Aqua exercises, or swimming 3 lengths of the Pool, 3 km cycle on a stationary bike and an easy 3 km walk.  Mild depression is part and parcel of living with a chronic and painful condition like arthritis; to help with this, this event doubles as a social get together with some craic, music, awards presentation and social dancing taking place afterwards (3 pm to 6 pm) in the Kerins o Rahilly Club House, Strand Rd, Tralee.

This event is taking place in the Tralee Sports Centre on Sunday October 23rd.  REGISTRATION at 10 am.  A person can take part in all 3 activities or only in the ones they feel comfortable doing.

Fee is €10 or €20 for a family.  Contact Tom Barrett on 0876723442.  Whether you are taking part for yourself, or for someone you know with arthritis, the funds that you are helping to raise will ensure that we can continue to provide services and supports to people living with arthritis in Kerry. The Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland relies on the continued support and generosity of our wonderful fundraisers. People just like you.
